Background: At the Carwash

Carwash, 2012
ANGELA SPEERS
Angela's Background Gallery contribution proves it's always a good thing to have a camera on hand. A quick trip to the carwash proved to be an inspiring opportunity to grab abstracted images. These foamy suds could be read as hot lips on the left or an aerial view of a beach complete with sea pool on the right. Any thoughts?

Background: Nicholas Pont

NICHOLAS PONT
Our latest Background image comes from Nicholas Pont who has been experimenting with pin-hole photography, in particular, the use of slits as the light capture device. The resulting images hint at potential subject, yet haunt and abstract the picture frame allowing for multiple readings with a psychological perspective. Working in both colour and black and white, Nick's work has looked to music for inspiration.

Background: Ellen Kozakiewicz

Untitled
ELLEN KOZAKIEWICZ
Our background image this week comes from Ellen Kozakiewicz. The image was made for the Alchemy class with a self-made pinhole camera and processed at Big W. In Ellen's case the film came back scratched, marked and folded which is not usually the result artists are after. In this case the image takes on a surreal beauty and interest with just a hint of melancholy thanks to all kinds of mistakes at the processing end.

Background: Kathleen Mackay

Untitled
KATHLEEN MACKAY
Inspiration can come from peculiar places. Current student Kathleen Mackay cites an anonymous quote on fashion which suggests that fashion is for all, big or small, with budget or without, and that fashion is an art of self expression and not an excuse to be 'pretty, popular and charismatic.' Kathleen's Eureka moment came when she noticed a woman dressed top to toe in a brown velour tracksuit clutching a brown monogrammed Louis Vuitton bag as she exited her gleaming BMW. Kathleen felt this woman was effectively branded by her labels and decided to pursue this idea for her body of work. Kathleen also informs us that Newcastle Fashion Week is approaching.

Background: Ryan Fitzgerald

Vanitas
RYAN FITZGERALD
Ryan Fitzgerald has turned his attention to the Vanitas lately, perhaps channeling Marian Drew along the way. Working in home made studios with found light sources, Ryan's series considers masculinity and puts a humourous, yet deep, spin on the notion of vanity and the perceived emptiness of an earthly existence. You can see some work in the flesh at Watt Space and at the Newcastle Art Space Emerging Art Award. But be quick, the exhibitions end soon.
